Occupational therapy addresses skills such as fine and visual motor skills, sensory integration and processing, handwriting, visual perceptual skills, executive functioning, self-care skills, school readiness skills and emotional regulation. Four examples your child may benefit from OT include:
Difficulty completing every day tasks: If you notice your child having consistent difficulties with daily activities like dressing, feeding themselves, or using scissors and pencils, these could be signs they might benefit from occupational therapy. These struggles often show up as frustration or avoidance of these tasks.
Challenges in School Settings: If your child seems to have trouble focusing, following instructions, or keeping up with peers in a classroom environment, occupational therapy can help. This includes difficulties with handwriting, organizing their work, or interacting socially with other children.
Coordination and Physical Movement Difficulties: If your child appears clumsy, tires easily during physical activities, often bumps into things, or has trouble with tasks that require fine motor skills (like buttoning a shirt), occupational therapy can assist.
Sensory Regulation Difficulties: If your child has difficulty tolerating certain textures while engaging in play or regarding clothing or if your child is a mover and has a hard time slowing down, occupational therapy can help address these areas.
